Scope and Contents

The Cleaveland Natural History Society of Bowdoin College was founded in June 1859 by students interested in the study of Natural History. Named in honor of Professor Parker Cleaveland, the society met in the room containing the cabinet with his collections, and members presented dissertations on botany, geology, mineralogy, and other subjects of natural history. When the society was formed, it acquired collections belonging to the Peucinian and Athenaean Societies. Honorary members as well as donations to the collections were welcomed. The records contain a constitution, correspondence, dissertations, receipts, reports, and other records.
