Scope and Contents
Manuscript journal created by Navy surgeon Manley F. Gates in 1902, documenting his service as Assistant Surgeon in the US Navy. The title page indicates that the journal was presented to the Naval Medical Examining Board. Includes descriptive summaries of his tours on the USS Kearsarge (1890-1891) and the USS Fern (1892), as well as his onshore postings, including Key West, FL, and Portsmouth, NH. He describes visits to ports of call while at sea, including Colombia, Haiti, Cuba, and other locations. Some photographs are tipped in. The journal finishes with descriptions of specific cases he had encountered, including dengue fever, multiple sclorosis, "la grippe", and dysentery.

Biographical / Historical
Manley F. Gates served his entire career in the US Navy, retiring as Medical Director. Gates graduated from the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia in 1888 and began his naval service the following year as Assistant Surgeon. He retired to Damariscotta, Maine and passed away in Southampton, England, in 1925.
