Scope and Content
The Charles T. and Sue Winchell Burnett papers are made up of Charles Burnett's correspondence, primarily with Dwight Morrow along with manuscripts of Burnett's book Hyde of Bowdoin. Manuscripts of songs and music composed by Charles Burnett for Bowdoin College (1912) and Susan Winchell Burnett's scrapbooks which include photographs, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera, make up the bulk of the papers.

Biographical/Historical Note
Charles Burnett was born on June 24, 1873, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He served as a professor of philosophy and psychology at Bowdoin College from 1904 to 1944, and was the director of the Museum of Art at Bowdoin College from 1918 to 1920. Burnett composed a series of songs for Bowdoin College, which became a standard part of the college repertoire. He also authored "Hyde of Bowdoin" in honor of Bowdoin president William De Witt Hyde. Charles Burnett died on January 31, 1946, in Brunswick, Maine.
Sue Winchell Burnett was born in 1881 in Brunswick, Maine. A talented violoncellist and musical artist, she played a cello solo, "If With All Your Hearts" from "Elijah," at the funeral of Joshua L. Chamberlain. She married Dr. Charles Theodore Burnett in 1914 in Brunswick. In 1963, the Sue Winchell Burnett Music Prize was established by Rebecca P. Bradley to honor a Bowdoin College senior music major who has made the most significant contribution to music during their time at the college. Sue Winchell Burnett died in 1962.
