Biographical / Historical
Born December 15, 1914, Hubert W Coffin started working from a young age. He earned financial support and schooling at the Shakers Sabbathday Lake, Maine, doing farm work from 1925 to 1929. Coffin also worked at Good Will Farm in Hinkley, Maine, and was the janitor and assistant librarian at the Library there as well as the head clerk for the general store. In 1933 he began attending Bowdoin College. Coffin was forced to take a break from college due to financial difficulties and worked in Libson, Maine, as a factory hand and foreman. In 1935, he returned to Bowdoin College, working as a waiter at one of the fraternities on campus and a library assistant. Coffin graduated from Bowdoin in 1938. He attended Harvard Law School and started working at Hale, Sanderson, Byrnes & Morton Law Firm in Boston, Massachuesettes, in 1941.
