Scope and Content

Collection includes Wendell Bradley's correspondence with family members, colleagues, and fellow sailing enthusiasts; drafts of, and materials pertaining to, Bradley's They Live by the Wind, a number of materials and article drafts pertaining to Bradley's various published works in both newspapers and magazines, Bradley's personal journals, a copy of Bradley's master's diploma, Bradley's memorial sermon, notes, clippings, and a collection of sailing-related photographs and slides with accompanying negatives.

Biographical/Historical Note

Wendell P. Bradley, born January 13th, 1929, Bowdoin Class of 1950, entered the U.S. Army on June 23rd, 1945 and was honorably discharged on November 11th, 1946. After attending Bowdoin, Bradley received a Master of Arts degree in political science from the University of Chicago (1952). Bradley was a reporter for the Washington Post for ten years between 1953 and 1963, after which he dedicated himself to sailing and writing. A major interest since childhood, sailing had always been a large part of Bradley's life. He spent his last years as a writer and boatsman.

Bradley died on July 13th, 1967 at the age of 38. The speech given at his memorial service is in his papers.
