Biographical/Historical Note
Founded in 1922 when Bowdoin was an all-male college, the Society of Bowdoin Women, with Kate Douglas Wiggin as its first president, strove to make all women visitors feel at home on campus, and to contribute to the enrichment of college life. Initially the Society's emphasis was on hospitality, especially at Commencement but has shifted its focus to providing scholarships, sponsoring lectures, and recognizing academic and athletic excellence.
