Subseries Description:

From the Series:

Consists of personal and some professional correspondence of both Kenneth and Edith Lansing Koon Sills, with the bulk of the materials being letters received and the private correspondence of KCMS. Early family correspondence includes numerous private letters from Kenneth to Edith, as well as inauguration and engagement congratulations and corresspondence from students, family, and Bowdoin faculty in World War I. President Sills's professional correspondence concerns both his work for the College, ranging from such subjects as student behavior and the College sesquicentennial in 1944 to the renovations to 85 Federal Street, and his positions on the Board of Visitors for the United States Naval Academy, the Carnegie Foudation, and his interest in the League of Nations. Notable correspondents include Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Henry Wallace, William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, Robert Frost, Kate Douglas Wiggin, Margaret Chase Smith, Ralph Owen Brewster, Robert Hale, Percival Baxter, Harold Hitz Burton, William Butler Yeats, and Bowdoin faculty and board members Thomas Van Cleve, Roscoe J. Ham, William J. Curtis, E.P. Mitchell, and Paul Nixon.

The correspondence of Edith Sills consists almost entirely of letters received, mostly of a personal nature. Particularly prevalent are letters from fellow Wellesley graduates, including life-long friend Mary Alice Wyman, and notes from family, including the Ketchums of Canada and the Atkinsons of Minneapolis. Also included are letters received regarding Mrs. Sills's positions on the boards of the American Association of University Women, the National Society of Colonial Dames, the Waynflete School in Portland, and Westbrook Junior College.
