Series Description:

Research files of John L. Idol, Jr., chiefly concerning operatic treatments of Nathaniel Hawthorne's literary works. Idol's colleague, Sterling Eisiminger, collaborated on the project. Included are biographical files, articles, copies of libretti and scores, letters, lists, notes on productions, and sound recordings. Also included are announcements, programs, reviews, copies of published articles, and other material providing historical background. The bulk of the research material was collected between 1979 and 1983.
