Series Description:
Contains two subseries: Monographs; and Articles, lectures, and essays. Published and unpublished works are interfiled. Drafts, final versions, galleys, research, notes, background information, copyright information, correspondence, and clippings may be included for each title. The monographs are Hawthorne: Critic of Society (originally Hall's doctoral dissertation); three textbooks, A Grammar of Literary Criticism, How Thinking Is Written, and Seeing and Describing (edited by Hall); and Yankee on a Rebel River, only excerpts of which were published as three articles in The Skipper, November and December 1964 and January 1965. The titles are: The Tale of the Misplaced Dory, The Land Is Mostly Water, and Labyrinth Without Exit. There are thirty addresses, articles, essays, and lectures, the titles of which may be found in the container listing. One folder of addresses to Bowdoin alumni, one of miscellaneous chapel talks, and two reviews by Hall are also included.
