Series Description:
This series documents President Coles' close involvement with the National Science Foundation and other science organizations, spanning his administration from 1953-67, and also containing records from the following administration until 1974. His primary academic work before becoming president of Bowdoin was in science (chemistry). He was involved with classified research for the U.S. Navy during the second world war. One of the main emphases of his administration was to strengthen the science curriculum of the college. This involved tracking and facilitating research fellowships and internships. Records in this group document discussions of the state of science curriculae in higher education nationally, and relationships between science study at the university level and government and military programs involving science. To this day, Bowdoin maintains extremely strong science programs.
