The first exhibit of its kind, The Portrayal of the Negro in American Painting was originally held for two months from May 15 to July 15, 1964, but was extended to September 6, 1964 due to popular demand. Marvin Sherwood Sadik, curator of the Museum of Art, organized this exhibit. Includes extensive correspondence with museums and galleries seeking information about paintings for potential inclusion, and arranging for loans of paintings to the Museum of Art, the security of exhibit and insurance for the paintings. Also includes publicity for the exhibit and information on the catalogue. Martin Luther King, Jr. visited the exhibit, and publicity materials about that visit are included.
