Series Description:
This series contains correspondence, records, and reports from 1955 regarding fraternities at Bowdoin. Records include College policy statements about fraternities, inspections and guidelines on standards of houses, financial information, and dining service and housing arrangements with the College. There are also incident reports, Interfraternity Council files, and correspondence among College administrators, fraternity leadership, alumni and others.
Allen Springer's 1984 paper, "The Status of Women in Fraternities: A Chronology" and Kimberly Hokanson's master's degree thesis entitled, "The Changing Status of Fraternities at Northeastern, Liberal Arts Colleges: Case Studies of Bowdoin and Colby Colleges" address coeducation in Bowdoin's fraternities. There is also early 1960s policy material regarding fraternities and discrimination.
