Scope and Contents

Various theatrical trade cards and advertisements for productions of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and unrelated products using the novel in their advertising make up the Trade Cards & Advertisements series. Companies throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries used the imagery and story of Uncle Tom’s Cabin to sell their products including pens, knives, coffee, spoons, stoves, cologne, and tobacco. Trade cards were popular among the various traveling productions of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and often included images of the characters or events from the story.
