Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series is made up of a large collection of College photogrpahs that document the visual history of Bowdoin that the Office of Communications organized and/or photographed. When known, information about the photographer and the individuals in the images are noted. Some photographs have more descriptive data than others. The series also includes news photographs with original captions, portraits of staff and faculty, candids of students and campus buildings and classrooms, as well as group photographs of classes, athletes and Bowdoin sports, and Bowdoin events like commencement, reunion, and family weekend. A large portion of the images are printed negative proof sheets which include some markings from the photographer or the office of communications. Additional negatives, slides, and proof images provide an insight into what campus looked like throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Older images are likely photocopies of originals that were used for publicity purposes. Some files include supplemental information like correspondence, notes, and memos that can provide further context to the images. This series does not reflect a holistic photographic history of the college, however the images gathered in the Office of Communication's photo morgue are preserved here to help flesh out what Bowdoin College's preferred public image was and continues to be.
