Volume 1

 File — Volume: 1

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Ledger used to record a manuscript newspaper issued by an unidentified women's society in Steep Falls, Maine, containing editorials, literary compositions, brief essays, commentary on local and national issues of the time, and minutes of society meetings. Topics include women's issues, the abolition of slavery, and anti-Catholicism. The contributions, submitted by members of the society and signed by given name only, presumably were submitted to the editor, who then composed a single fair copy for each issue and passed the ledger along to society members for their edification. Volume 1, issued in 4 numbers, appears in a single hand on bound-in pages; vol. 2, no. 2, is laid in on unbound, unruled violet sheets with text written in another hand. Aside from the newspaper entries, the ledger is blank.
