This series contains materials related to the legal and political work of Jonathan Cilley. There are documents related to three legal cases in which Jonathan Cilley was involved. In Cilley v. Todd, Cilley accused Todd of libelous statements printed in the Eastern Argus newspaper. In Estate of Jonathan Cilley v. John Ruggles, John Ruggles brought a suit against Cilley’s estate after his death claiming that Cilley owed him money. McCobb v. Watts concerned fee payment for the vessel Catharine on the island of Monhegan. The three legal cases are particularly notable in their overlap of participants: McCobb, Ruggles, and Hezekiah Prince. The series also includes a small amount of material related to Cilley's time in the state and national legislature, especially draft speeches.
