From the Series:

Charles Peleg Chander (1835-1862) the son of Charles Parsons Chandler and Sarah Murray Wheeler Chandler, was the newphew of Theophilus and Horace P. Chandler and the grand-nephew of Peleg W. Chandler. This series contains Chandler's Civil War letters to his mother (June 20, 1861-June 26, 1862), including one containing gossip about "Mrs. President Lincoln" (November 1, 1861). A series of letters describe the Battle of Williamsburg (May 11, 1862-May 17, 1862), and other letters detail Chandler's experiences and impressions of the war. The series also includes correspondence from General Hooker, Governor Andrew, C.E. Stowe, J.P. Fessenden, William W. Bullock, and others. There are also letters regarding the search for the whereabouts of Col. Chandler after the Battle of Malvern Hill, and his death. Other material includes: three photographs of Col. Chandler; an 1862 newspaper clipping of the approach of the Union Armies on Richmond, including a map; and Charles P. Chandler's Civil War journal (May 22, 1861-June 14, 1861).
