Series Description:
Correspondence, mostly letters received by Howard (letters sent are contained in letterpress volumes, M91.7) dealing with his service as Commander of the Department of the Columbia (1874-80), the Department of West Point (1880-82), the Department of the Platte (1882-86) and the Division of the Pacific (1886-88). Incomplete indexes (M91.9) are available for use in Special Collections. During this period he was involved in the Nez Perce and Bannock wars, served as Superintendent of USMA and represented the U.S. Army at the 1884 French Army maneuvers.
