48 State American Flag, ownership attributed to Donald Baxter MacMillan
Series Description:
This series contains a chart of Frobisher Bay showing the track of the Franklin Research Expedition in the 1860s, book jackets, dinner menus, programs, invitations, genealogical material for the MacMillan and Look families, and other ephemeral material. In addition, the series contains greeting and holiday cards, some hand drawn by Kate Hettasch, drawings and paintings by various artists, and postage stamps depicting the Arctic. Other notable items include: a reward certificate from Sir John Franklin for apprehending runaway prisoners (1939), a Senate Joint Resolution bestowing silver medals to the members of the Peary Polar Expedition (1939), an oversize hand drawn honorary degree for Miriam MacMillan from Kate Hettasch, a giant valentine card from Donald MacMillan to Miriam MacMillan, a “Night of Exploration Dinner” program signed by Lowell Thomas and Vilhjamur Stefansson (1961), and a cloth pouch from the Moravian Mission. Realia includes a 48-star American flag, ownership attributed to Donald MacMillan, and a Bowdoin Pennant that flew through the 1934 MacMillan Arctic Expedition and the 1939 Byrd Expedition.
