Description:
Records span a period ranging from Mitchell's gubernatorial race of 1974 through the 1982 election and concluding with his reelection in 1988. Administrative records contain subject files, schedules, correspondence, staff memos, political endorsements, mailings, fundraising materials, a briefing book, and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee materials. Significant issues and events covered in these files include the Wyman campaign; various fundraisers; the Mondale presidential campaign; the Iran-Contra Affair; the invasion of Grenada; the Veterans' Administration; health care reform; the budget and federal deficit; and Amtrak/Conrail. Specific legislation discussed includes the Indoor Air Quality Act; various defense appropriations bills; an FEC Act; protection for the Gulf of Maine; and a House bill granting civil rights to homosexuals, handicapped individuals, and other groups.
In his 1988 campaign Mitchell was assisted by Larry Benoit, Martha Pope, Mary McAleney, Grace Reef, Sharon Sudbay, and Chris Williams, among others.
