Records span years from 1986 through 1994. Files contain memos, statements, reports, brochures, convention information, newsletters, transcripts, correspondence, press releases and press clippings. Some are administrative files concerning Senator Mitchell's activities, including scheduling and accomplishments. Others are strictly subject files for the purpose of providing information on the current status of issues and events to the press and to the press office staff. Files also contain transcripts of and correspondence about media events. Later files are predominantly about health care reform.

Other significant issues include clean air, abortion, education, rail service to Maine, ethics, housing, drugs and crime, civil rights, and the 100th Congress. Also included is information on the presidential budgets of Reagan and Bush, job creation, war powers, poll closings, campaign finance reform, and welfare reform. Significant events covered include the Persian Gulf War, leaking of classified information, the Bush administration's involvement in affordable health care, and the 1989 Pan Am 103 bombing.
