Description:
Files in this series contain administrative files, town meeting notices, mass mailings reports, scheduling files, constituent index files, memos, press clippings, commission reports, brochures, congressional records, index files, and constituent letters. Records span from 1980 through 1994. Among the more significant issues are the proposed Air Force Base Closures (eg. Pease Base in N.H.), the Catarac Dam Project in Saco, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Projects, Grants Reports and Loan Announcements, as well as numerous personal concerns of the Senator Mitchell's constituents, such as farming, Social Security, arms control, the environment, veterans' affairs, fishery agreements, and the Indian land claims settlement.
Significant events covered include the presidential inaugurations of 1989 and 1993 and specific town meetings organized between 1984 and 1994 in which Senator Mitchell participated.
These files contain a number of index systems detailing letters sent to Senator Mitchell's offices, mostly by concerned individuals and constituents. Highlighted among these are Roger F. Normand, the Mayor of Biddeford; Judith A. Cadorette, a York County field representative; as well as numerous individuals, corporations, non-profit organizations, and businesses. These index files detail the topic and subtopic of concern, the type of document (i.e. letter or report), and the answer each of these letters received, detailing how the Senator's office helped resolve the concern, making reference to specific legislation enacted when useful.
Among the numerous staff members who were involved with these constituent files are Janie O'Connor, Diane Smith, Robert Carolla, Steve Hart, Jennifer Marks, Tom Gallagher, Charlene Sturbitts, Estelle Lavoie, Michael Hastings, Chris Williams, Anita Ruud, Grace Reef, Martha Pope, Robert Rozen, Mike Casella, Anita Jensen, Robert Davidson, and Harriet Sopher.
