Base Closure hearing - Portsmouth [VHS video tape]

 File — Box: 675
Identifier: M202.6.3.5

Description:

From the Sub-Series:

Files from the Biddeford field office were created from 1981 through 1994, with most dating after 1988. Material includes press releases, memos, news clippings, reports, meeting notes, correspondence, grant notifications, project files, "issue request" forms, mail count logs, and one videocassette. Many the files involve environmental concerns in this coastal area. Some document communications with the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) on wetlands regulations, on building in the town of Ogunquit and other towns, and on negotiations between the E.P.A. and the South Berwick Water District regarding the Hooper Sands toxic site. Other environmental discussions focus on the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the Saco Tannery waste site, cleanup plans for the Pease Air Force Base in nearby New Hampshire, and the Cataract Dam project. Other coastal issues include the Army Corps of Engineers project at Camp Ellis Beach to prevent beach erosion.

Other files in this series involve defense contractors in the area - Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Saco Defense, and the Pratt-Whitney factory in North Berwick.

Some administrative files are included, which document communications between local and Washington, D.C., staff on legislative positions and issues, office procedures, and staffing changes. The long-term field office representative for the Biddeford office was Judy Cadorette.
