1989 Bicentennial Events
Description:
This series contains a continuous record of Mitchell's speeches from 1980 through 1994. Some are in draft form, others are final. Senator Mitchell's speaking engagements increased in number in 1989 after his election to the majority leader post. Subjects range from human rights to defense and foreign policy, the environment, budget and economics, domestic issues, and politics. The speeches reflect contemporary issues; they also contain references to former Senator Muskie, Presidents Reagan, Carter, Clinton, other contemporary politicians, and world leaders. Most of the speeches were written by Anita Jensen, Senator Mitchell's principal speech writer.
