Scope and Contents

Files contain correspondence, case reports, reports on speeches, clippings, and project records. Records span years from 1987 through 1994. Significant issues covered include defense, the environment, health care, foreign affairs, veterans, Kennebec Valley housing and medical center, social security, and transportation (especially the Augusta State Airport and railroads).

Significant events covered include sewer and wasterwater treatment systems, Mitchell being named chair of Radioactive Waste Program, Medicare '99, Maine Veterans Home and Medicaid payments, successful cleanup of the Winthrop Superfund Site, new administration at the University of Maine, and the 112th Maine State Legislation. Also, information on the Maine Central Railroad Strike and Waterville Humane Society's proposal for a wildlife sanctuary, is provided.

The records include the involvement of many interest groups, such as veterans, Advocates for the Developmentally Disabled, the Maine Parent Federation Inc., and the Waterville Humane Society. There are reports and correspondence regarding legislation such as the 1987 Agricultural Credit Act, which helped farmers with loans and farm credit system; the Health Security Act; and the Airport Improvement Program.

The long-term field office representative was Tom Bertocci. Records contain confidential material regarding veterans, social security, taxes, and the environment.
