Description:
Files for the Portland field office were created from 1980 through 1994. Material types include press releases and memos, with reports, speeches and statements, statistics, press clippings, grant notifications and information, and schedules. Subjects include a variety of topics that echo discussions in other series. The most predominant issues are fishing concerns, the environment, including Superfund and hazardous waste disposal as well as the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, the federal deficit, shipping issues, especially concerning Bath Iron Works, and health care. Also covered are topics such as nuclear arms control, the Iran/Contra hearings, economic development, education financing in Maine, agriculture, and campaign reform.

Background Note:
The Portland field office was the "flagship" of the Mitchell field offices. This office formed the front line for dealing with local issues as well as for organizing visits by the Senator to the state. Media information and relations were organized from this location, and this office was the clearinghouse for certain types of local information, especially the status of grants received by agencies and organizations in the state.
