Description:
Personal correspondence is dated from 1980 to 1994. It consists of communiques on legislation, thanks for support, praise for accomplishments, affirmation of shared views, ongoing discussions, acknowledgments of meetings or conversations, regrets, thank you notes for gifts, and Christmas and birthday cards. The bulk of the correspondence is with other senators. Other correspondents include Presidents Bush and Clinton, members of the White House cabinet, and other government officials, friends, and heads of corporations.

Background Note:
Senator Mitchell's correspondence with other politicans, particularly senators, was an important part of the development of political relationships and alliances. This correspondence also served a critical role in unofficial rules of decorum and respect in the Senate and as the currency and record of political life, of mutual cooperation, and of the progression of events in the U.S. Congress.
