From the Sub-Series:

Briefing books from 1971 and 1972 concern scheduling, delegate selection, political issues, and Richard Nixon. Briefing books are generally bound reports that summarize current information to be used by the candidate or staffer for quick reference. These contain Muskie's positions on various issues. He stood for provision of educational opportunities for low-income people, development of rural areas, protecting the consumer, protecting the environment (he co-sponsored the Clean Air Act of 1963); he wanted to end the military action in Vietnam; he worked for national health insurance, fair housing, and security for the elderly, and tax reform. Muskie's campaign staff and active members of the Maine Democratic Party are listed in these books.
