Series Description:
Memorabilia were kept by Senator Mitchell's office from 1980 through 1994. Types of memorabilia include plaques, prints, certificates, trophies, figurines, objects, and original works of art, some bound volumes, and a large collection of unframed and framed photographs. All of the memorabilia and most of the photographs are cataloged individually. Most of the memorabilia were received as gifts from a variety of organizations, constituent groups, congressional colleagues, other government officials, or foreign dignitaries. Most of the photographs were taken by Mitchell's staff, the U.S. Senate Photographic Studio staff, or White House staff.

Background Note:
During his tenure as Senator from 1980 through 1994 George Mitchell received a variety of gifts--usually plaques or certificates--generally from corporations, professional associations, or non-profit or social organizations (often from Maine), or from Congressional colleagues or other government officials in Washington, D.C. Some memorabilia came from foreign dignitaries visiting the United States or while Mitchell was visiting foreign countries. These gifts were usually given in acknowledgement and appreciation of work Mitchell had done for the organization or individual. These memorabilia provide tangible evidence of Mitchell's relationship with constituents and mark many of his important accomplishments.
Senator Mitchell's staff also maintained a large collection of photographs documenting his activities.
